History

With the encouragement of past existing North Carolina State and National School Organizations, the North Carolina State and National School Organization, the North Carolina Retired School Personnel (NCRSP) was organized in the early 1960s.  It is a division of the NCAE and an affiliate of the NEA.
The Wilkes Unit of Retired School Personnel was initiated by Mrs. Sallie Gilreath in 1973.  Twenty-six school retirees were invited to a luncheon meeting at the Holiday Inn in Wilkesboro, NC on March 14, 1973.  Visitors from the Catawba County Unit were invited to assist Mrs. Gilreath and others with this organizational meeting.  A ten dollar fee was charged for lifetime membership in NCAE.  Local meetings were to be held 4 times per year and officers were elected.  A committee was appointed on December 12, 1973, to compose the Constitution and By-Laws, and committees were formed in September 1974.  The State of North Carolina chartered the Organization on July 24, 1978.
